Advertising

Some of our members have expressed an interest in advertising their businesses through the network.  After much discussion, the board has agreed to allow members only limited advertising options on the website or as a newsletter sponsor.

This will help offset network operating costs as well as provide a service to network members.

PPN continues to protect the privacy of our members.  Please see our privacy policy at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you are interested in advertising, please email Kathryn.

August, 2006

As neighborhood kids begin heading back to school, it seems like summer is quickly slipping into fall. Plans are underway for our next ordering opportunities which will take advantage of this year's harvest.  More details will be available next month.

 Who Do You Know?

We are planning now for our 2007 Walton Feed order.  We heard loud and clear that there is a need for two truckloads.  In order to provide for a shipment that large, we will need an indoor location with a minimum of 10,000 square feet for a Friday and Saturday.  The building must have a ground level loading bay.  A raised loading dock will not work.  If you have access to a large warehouse, barn, or other kind of building, please contact Kathryn as soon as possible.

Oh, Nuts

We have been busily working on arrangements for our fall order of nuts and dried fruits.  Information and pricing will be available in late September for this year's harvest.  We will get the ordering details to you as soon as they become available.  We are also hoping to add some new kinds of products to the fall order.  For those of you who replied to our survey asking what kinds of products you would like to see offered, we heard you!  Watch for details in September's newsletter.

Tip of the Month

Emergency Preparation - In an emergency, our pets are victims, too.  Be sure to plan food and water for them as well.

Recipe of the Month

Thanks to Phyllis Pollard for contributing this month's recipe from The Yeast Connection Cookbook.

Waffles
2 t baking powder OR (3/4 t unbuffered, corn-free vitamin C crystals and 1/3 c boiling water, 2 t baking soda)
1 2/3 c cool water, nut milk or stevia tea
2 1/4 cups amaranth flour
1/3 c arrowroot or tapioca starch
1/2 t salt
1/4 c oil
Combine vitamin C crystals, and cool water, stir to dissolve.  In a mixing bowl combine flour, salt, and starch.  Whisk the mixture to blend ingredient.  When the crystals are dissolved, whisk in the vitamin C water and oil.  When the waffle iron is ready, combine soda and boiling water in a small bowl-it will foam.  Stir to dissolve; whisk into the batter.

These are crisp waffles and my family loves them.  I use baking powder (Rumford's aluminum free, from Walton).

Financial Corner

What is a fixed annuity?

A fixed annuity is a long-term contract between you and an insurance company, which can provide a guaranteed, lifetime income – income that you can’t outlive.

You can purchase a fixed annuity with either a single, lump-sum payment or on a periodic premium basis. You also can choose when you will receive payouts from your fixed annuity, either immediately or beginning at some future date.

Most fixed annuities earn a competitive interest rate, often above the rates offered for money market accounts or certificates of deposit. And fixed annuities have a guaranteed minimum interest rate.

Best of all, fixed annuities are tax-deferred under current tax laws. The interest earned in your fixed annuity is not taxed until you withdraw the money, usually when your total income is lower and taxable at a lower rate. This is not true for certificates of deposit, money market funds, mutual funds or bonds. You pay an income tax on the interest earned in these financial products in the year that the interest was earned.

Because fixed annuities are earmarked for retirement, you may pay penalties if you withdraw funds from your annuity before age 59 ½, including a 10 percent federal income tax penalty. However, you can withdraw money before age 59 ½ under certain limited circumstances, such as death or disability or by taking substantial equal periodic payments.
